Art Experiences with Independent Lifestyles

Through a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, I had the opportunity to lead two art experiences with members of Independent Lifestyles (ILICIL), an organization dedicated to empowering people with disabilities, advocating for inclusion, and redefining perceptions of ability.

Adapted Painting

The goal of these sessions was to create art experiences that could be adapted to accommodate a wide range of physical abilities and ways of participating. During the first session, participants explored painting using a variety of brushes, tools, and alternative materials that could be adapted to individual needs and preferences. Rather than requiring everyone to use materials in the same way, participants were encouraged to find the tools and techniques that worked best for them.

Flower Pounding

For the second session, participants created flower-pounded tote bags using fresh flowers and natural materials. The process of placing flowers onto fabric and transferring their natural pigments created an opportunity to explore color, texture, pattern, and the unexpected qualities of working with natural materials.

Working with ILICIL reinforced one of the central ideas behind my teaching practice: accessibility begins with flexibility. By offering multiple ways to approach a project and allowing participants to determine how they engage with the materials, art can become an experience in which everyone has the opportunity to make choices, experiment, and create something uniquely their own.
